This is a surgical procedure to remove a breast lump. This procedure is normally done in an operation theatre in a hospital, under monitored anaesthetic care (MAC) administered by an anesthetist. The breast lump is removed as one single piece to allow for a complete pathological examination. Very often, the doctor will use an ultrasound scan intra-operatively to guide the surgery, so as to ensure that the whole lump is removed completely. Yet, in certain situations where the breast lump is too small or not apparent on ultrasound scan, a very fine wire or marker can be placed to mark the exact location of the breast lump just before the operation to aid surgical excision.
