Pre-Pregnancy Check helps couples planning to start their family understand their health and fertility status before trying for a pregnancy. The doctor will perform an examination including a pelvic ultrasound scan for the wife to ensure that the pelvic organs, including the uterus and the ovaries, are healthy.
A cervical smear (Pap smear) test will be performed as a cervical cancer screening. The husband will undergo a semen analysis to evaluate his fertility.
The semen analysis offered at the Centre is performed by experienced technologists specialized in fertility assessment with reference to the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, and includes a comprehensive assessment of the physical characteristics of the semen, semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm motility and progression, as well as morphology.
Blood tests will be performed for the couple to see if there are any diseases that need to be treated.
The couple will be screened for thalassaemia, which is a very common genetic disease in Chinese. Thalassaemia is caused by a recessive gene. This means that both copies of the thalassaemia gene must be present for a person to be affected by the disease, i.e. severe anaemia. A person carrying one copy of the thalassaemia gene is a healthy person called a carrier. If the couple are both carriers, they will have 25% chance of having a child affected by severe anaemia.
Apart from screening for thalassaemia, screening for other hereditary diseases with Expanded Carrier Screening (ECS) will also be discussed. With a single blood sample, ECS can screen for 302 genetic diseases.
The doctor will also discuss with the couple about vaccinations that are relevant to the couple, such as the HPV vaccine, the Rubella vaccine (or MMR vaccine), the Chickenpox vaccine and the Hepatitis B vaccine.
